Boy has our life changed since we got Baxter! I have to say, he has been so much fun and laughter. And SMART! I’m totally blown away how smart these Goldendoodles are.

LIFE WITH A NEW PUPPY
We haven’t had a puppy in the house in many years. 22 years to be exact!
First Came St Nicholas
My first puppy after we got married was a Cocker Spaniel my husband bought me for our 1st Christmas, named Saint Nicholas. We had him for over 12 years! Our son was 2 when our Cocker passed away and we stayed “dogless” for a bit. But when our son became 4 years old, he kept asking for a dog.
Then came Lucky
So I did what all good mother’s do….I bought a puppy! We decided on a Beagle, and our son named him Lucky. It was a tragic story however, as this little guy had bad genetics and a serious spinal issue. So after only having him for a couple months, 2 weeks before Christmas, we had to put him down. We were all devastated!
Enter Snoopy the Fox Hound! A good friend of ours, heard of the loss of our puppy and insisted we take one of her dogs. We went to pick up Snoopy…he wasn’t a beagle, nor a puppy. He was a full grown Fox Hound, like from the Disney movie “The Fox and the Hound”…. but he was the sweetest dog…and we had him for many years.
Next Up Trouble the Shih Tzu
After Snoopy, we decided to look for a rescue doggy. We searched for over 6 months to find a Shih Tzu, as our good friends had one and I loved this breed. Bonus, non-shedding and small! So we found our little Trouble (he was already named!) at a SPCA event. He went everywhere with us. And lived a very long life of 14 years.
So as you can see, it’s been a LONG TIME since we’ve had a puppy! Thankfully, Baxter only cried one night in his crate. (Yes, we are big fans of crate training). A couple nights after that we had middle of the night taking out to go potty. But since then, he goes all night long in his crate and he is the smartest dog we have ever had!
BAXTER’S FIRST BIG TRIP
We decided to visit our son who lives in Mobile, AL for Christmas, and there was no way I was leaving Baxter with a sitter….so we decided to break the trip up into two days and spend the night in a hotel on the way down and back. I have to say, this is THE BEST TRAVEL DOG we have ever had. He loves the car, he settles in right away and then naps. (Puppies nap a lot!) We stopped every two hours just to take a potty break and stretch his legs.
The hotel experience was fantastic, thanks to crate training! Never heard a peep from him all night. No accidents on the entire trip. He even did great in our son’s house, thanks to a couple gates we took with us to keep in him the kitchen when we had to step out of the house.
Baxter at the young age of 3 months old already knows commands and performs then instantly when asked. He can SIT, STAY (with me walking out of view), lay DOWN, SHAKE…..he truly is the smartest pup!
So if you’re thinking of maybe one day getting a puppy, here’s my advice. Puppies take a LOT of work…to properly train them. You need to start when you first bring them home, so they know the ground rules and who is the Alpha. You need to be prepared for accidents, to puppy-proof the area they’ll be in (or pay the consequences!) and you need to spend time with them. Dogs need a pack….and if you bring them into your home…you are his Pack!
