I LOVE front porches. Especially southern, farmhouse style front porches where you can sit with a cup of coffee and watch the world go by!

I remember staying with my grandmother in the summertime, who lived on Main Street, and sitting on the front porch of her Craftsman 1920’s home. It had lots of shade and was large and she always had it decorated so cute. Lots of places to relax, always had a pretty rug, pillows for the chairs and there were potted plants to give it some life. She always made me a Coke Float, as Coke’s were her vice, and I remember so fondly watching neighbors walk by and saying hello. Porches were the social lifestyle back then.
Since those early years, I’ve always been drawn to porches. Whether it’s a front porch to sit and watch traffic flow by or the back porch where it’s more private, porches are my summer thing. It’s where I can sit, sip my morning coffee and think about all the details of the day before me, or relax in the evening and reflect on all that I did (or should have done!).
Whether you have a big porch or a small porch, you can always make it more inviting by what you bring into the space. My own home has a very small front porch. But it’s big enough for a porch swing on one end, a rocker on the other, and I always like to add some plants. For our Modern Farmhouse Airbnb, the porch is also small, but it’s so inviting with the two rockers and some plants. I added some cute cushions, some little signs to hang on the siding (check out these great vinyl siding clips!) which gives the space a more welcoming feel. Don’t forget a nice rug to wipe your feet! I originally had a coco mat type rug with a cute saying, but those darn things shed and was constantly picking up pieces inside the house! Since this is a vacation rental, I decided to go with function over cuteness!
Back porches are a great spot as well to unwind from the day. Make sure you have some comfortable seating, a place to maybe put your feet up. For our Modern Farmhouse, we had first used colorful plastic Adirondack chairs. They are super comfortable, especially with cushions, but we have a lot of wind here on the farm (which is an awesome thing in the summer!) but the chairs literally kept ending up in the yard! so we had to act quickly between guests, and switched it to these metal chairs with cushions. They are nice, but I might change it out next year with some bigger, more comfortable chairs. But adding a rug for some décor appeal, along with plants of course, and a place to sit a drink, you’ll be all set for nice spot….for yourself or your guests! And think about adding unusual pieces to the area. I like using old pieces of furniture like this vintage enamel topped table. I love the distressed look it has. It’s the perfect spot to hold snacks or a big pitcher of lemonade!
